The Game Boy Advance is the successor to the Game Boy. It was released in 2001 so is now purchasable second hand. The original model does not have an illuminated screen but the folding Game Boy Advance SP added this in 2003. There is also a small (now collectable) Game Boy Micro, that was released in 2005.
The Game Boy Advance can play Game Boy and Game Boy Colour cartridges. You can also play Game Boy Advance games on Nintendo DS and DS Lite. The Game Boy Advance cartridge slot is not available on the Nintendo DSi and new systems like the Nintendo 3DS.
