Echo is a traversal game where you must survive AI versions of yourself that learn from your actions to hunt you down. You work through the levels of a palace using stealth, combat and traversal, but each move you make is obtained by enemies to make them harder to defeat. It stands out for the uneasy sense of being hunted by your own actions - in this game attack is not the best form of defence, but neither is defence.

NotesAccessibility Notes

Holds, simultaneous inputs and rapid presses are not needed to play the game. While there are no time limits, the power cycle adds an incentive to be quick, and the blackout period is a moment when you can do things without the penalty of the clones learning, so there is pressure to get a lot done in this moment. You can choose your difficulty at the start of the game, which affects the intelligence of the clones.

The game only saves at certain sections, so you can lose a lot of progress.

The game can be frightening, with clones surprising you, and the overall tone is unsettling. The game is also often quite dark and low in contrast, and areas tend to look the same, making navigation often somewhat complicated This is compounded by the lack of explicit objectives or map.

Some objects you need to interact with to progress can be very difficult to make out due to contrast and a lack of indicators until you are very close by. Subtitles are high in contrast, but less than 1/20th of screen height in a fairly thin font. UI text is white with no background, so it can be extremely low in contrast in the bright interior spaces of the palace.

There is a UI element that clearly indicates in high contrast when you're spotted, as well as the direction from which you've been seen. This is accompanied by a distinct audio cue.
