The Flame In The Flood is a traversal survival game where you steer a raft down a raging river in the ruins of America. There are no difficulty settings, and the game is quite challenging. During combat, quick and precise reactions are needed. The day and night cycle adds an element of pressure as things get harder at night.

Text is often low in contrast and less than 1/20th of screen height. The game is very dark during nighttime, with extremely low contrast and flashes of lightning that light up the whole screen and cannot be disabled.
