Play Overview
A Good Gardener (2024) is a gardening simulation where you grow plants for your country's war effort. Play involves exploring a bombed-out home to place seeds and water them to grow. It stands out for how the fruit of your plants unsettle your cosy garden with a story about conflict.
It's a short story game about new things growing in ruined places. Play is a cycle of planting your seeds, watering them and protecting them from birds and weeds. Weather changes so that some days it rains and waters your plants for you. Other days it's sunny and you need to be meticulous with your watering can. As you return to your garden each day you slowly learn the story behind the world and your character.
As you progress your plants grow unexpected fruits and flowers that lead to more of the story. Once fully grown the plants are taken away and it becomes apparent that you are as much a prisoner as a gardener.
The result is a game that invites you not only to tend a garden but reflect on the tension between making and destroying. Can you grow something good in an oppressive place? Can destructive objects be the fruit of tender care?
