Play Overview
Abiotic Factor (2024) is a survival adventure where you play a group of scientists trapped in a secret facility and must create a base of operations. With monsters and robots patrolling the corridors, you use office equipment and your scientific knowledge to fight and survive. It stands out for the unusual everyday setting where you must repurpose mundane items to help you.
You play a new hire at a facility investigating paranormal monsters through portals to other worlds. On your first day, as you explore the building, you realise there has been a containment breach; the portals have opened and monsters stalk the halls. Worse, the robots meant to keep you safe have gone rogue and an ancient militia has invaded. Against these three forces, you must use your scientific knowledge and skills to construct and fortify a base of operations and the tools and weapons you need to survive.
Play is open-ended but focuses on exploring the facility by yourself or with friends. You create a background for your character, choosing their PhD and related strengths and weaknesses. As you explore, you gather resources to craft weapons and useful items, then construct a base of operations from which to set out on missions into the wider facility.
Other surviving scientists you meet can provide useful information and assist as you gradually work to eliminate the threats. Combat involves using your homemade weapons to defeat hostiles, and obtain their gear. As you grow in strength, you can improve different character skills to match your play style.
The result is a game that combines survival and base-building with a creepy supernatural facility to create a mysterious and engaging simulation experience. Gradually carving out an existence amid the chaos makes for a tense yet engaging and entertaining experience, whether alone or with friends.
