Play Overview
Anthology of The Killer (2024) is a collection of wacky comedy-horror adventures where you explore an abstract world teeming with serial murderers, most infamously, a humanoid bird known as The Killer. To play, you explore liminal spaces and meet (or run from) strange characters, following the protagonist's witty train of thought along the way. It stands out for its offbeat tone and surreal atmosphere, where humour, horror, and absurdity blur into something oddly compelling.
You play BB, collecting material for her magazine across nine surreal locations, such as an eerie, mind-bending waterpark. You explore these areas, walking up to floating checkpoints to read BB's insights on the situation, which tend to be humorously dry and nonchalant to the paranormal danger you often encounter. For example, at one point, you are kidnapped by monstrous researchers who plan to dissect you, believing you are a sentient doll.
As you progress, the areas become increasingly dreamlike and disorienting. You have multiple encounters with The Killer, a bird-headed man who chases you through corridors and air vents. The nine levels all tie into each other, and you gradually learn more about the serial-killer world and become inevitably fond of BB's sardonic humour.
The result is a game that, on its surface, is about escaping serial killers. However, the real horror isn’t individual violence but systemic cruelty. By the end, bureaucracies, capitalism, and even academia have had their moment in the spotlight. This, along with themes of the struggle to find meaning and the absurdity of modern life, makes it stand out as much as its magazine-pastiche presentation.
