Play Overview
Boyce the Voice (2024) is a narrative rhythm game about a young man who discovers a love for voice acting. Play involves pressing buttons in time to colour-coded inputs to construct voiceovers and discover more of the story. It's unique because it uses familiar rhythm-based play to draw back the curtain on a voice actor's journey to success.
You play as Boyce, a young mailman who stumbles across a top talent scout looking for a voice artist to represent ordinary people. You're given a rapid set of inputs to match by pressing buttons on your keyboard or controller in time with words in the voiceover script. Messing up the button presses means Boyce stutters and depletes his health bar and shields.
As you progress the longer and more complex inputs can get overwhelming, but when you fail a level you can quickly restart without being penalised. Missed or incorrect button presses sap your health, but you can restore this by stringing together correct button presses. At the end of each level your score is tallied, so you can keep challenging yourself to get a perfect run.
The result is a game which offers an unusual way to experience the work of a voice actor. It's a fun challenge with a poignant edge as you affect the progress of Boyce's career.
