Play Overview
Cargo Commander (2012) is a traversal and collecting game about surviving alone in space, light years away from your family, armed with a multi-function cannon. Play involves carefully entering and exploring the ship containers to find cargo, using gun physics to clear the way and deal with enemies. It stands out for the ever-changing orientation and the emergent tactics you develop to tackle each scenario.
Your terms of employment are simple: travel through the space, salvage cargo from alien-infested containers and don't die. To do this, you first attract passing containers to attach to your ship, enter them and then use your gun to punch and shoot the mutants. You also need to use your gun and explosives to work with the physics and destructible environments. In this way, you can create your own path to the cargo.
As you progress, you learn how to use the containers you enter and your weapons to your advantage. Do well and you are rewarded with upgradeable weapons and tools. If you fail, your body is left behind for other players to loot.
The result is a game with a surprising amount of flexibility in how you progress. The best moments are using the physics in your favour to emerge intact from impossible situations.
