Play Overview
Caves of Qud (2024) is a survival adventure game about exploring a retro-looking post-apocalyptic future as a mutated human. Like a Dungeons. & Dragons adventure you explore the world while dealing with dangerous creatures and obstacles, in a quest to find safety. The worlds are different each time you restart, but the real draw is the deeply detailed civilizations and history you can discover along the way.
In a disastrous alternative future, you set out to find a new home using only your wits in a dangerous world. Unlike other dungeon survival games, the simple visuals and textual world representation mean Caves of Qud can create an organic and ever-changing world. There are complex histories, politics and physics to deal with as you try to survive - from finding a mysterious frog mushroom that gives you extra health to discovering an ancient battle fought with magical staffs.
As you progress, you learn more about the world and how you can affect it. Success requires this deep understanding of the evolving lore and physics of the place, but also your ability to adapt to the scenarios you encounter. If things get too challenging, there are different modes to choose from. For example, the Wander option enables a focus on exploration instead of survival.
The result is an intriguing game that’s not what it first appears. The devil is in the details, as every last minutia of the world can be investigated for a fuller understanding. It’s an intricate and lovingly created reality all made from text. But don’t let that fool you this is one of the most challenging and complex dungeon explorer games available.
