In this world, a ghastly character wakes once a year and paints upon her monolith. Everyone of that age turns to smoke and fades away. Each year, the number decreases, so there is now no one left in the world who is over the age of 44. You join a mission 43 that follows previous years' failed attempts to destroy the Paintress and end the cycle.

You explore the world, meet inhabitants, and grow to understand the trauma and impact of the situation. This takes you from the Island of Visages to the Forgotten Battlefield, discovering secrets and hidden quests along the way. You can recruit special companions to access new travel methods and discover secret areas of the world.

As you progress, you learn to develop your party with gear, stats, skills, and character synergies. This helps in battles with enemies that are won through a combination of taking turns to choose attacks and real-time dodging and power-ups. It's important to know your party and how their abilities work together to chain combos by mastering synergies and attack rhythms.

The result is a game with a huge and heartbreaking story you discover by exploring its enchanting realm and meeting surreal comrades and adversaries. It's exciting and challenging, but also takes you on a journey with themes of mortality and hope.
