Play Overview
Day of the Tentacle (2016) is a point-and-click adventure where you play three friends sent through time to stop a mutated tentacle from destroying mankind. Play involves exploring the same mansion during different eras, transmitting and receiving collected items through time and figuring out how to use them. It stands out for its comedic writing of bizarre characters who ping between past, present and future as you work to unravel what happened.
You play friends Hoagie, Bernard and Laverne who accidentally end up in the past, present and future versions of a mad scientist's mansion and must stop the mutated tentacles from taking over. You explore the mansion and interact with items (including a grandfather clock, people like Thomas Jefferson, and the time machine toilet) to find a way forward.
As you progress, you discover the time machine is not the only way to transmit items through time. For example, with Bernard, you can freeze a hamster in the present and then defrost it in the future. It's not always clear whether items are important or not, but through trial, error and intuition, you can find secret passages and useful tools.
The result is a surprisingly arresting story that's genuinely funny. Its combination of ridiculous comedy, fourth-wall-breaking dialogue and opaque puzzles made it a cult classic.
