Play OverviewPlay Overview

Dragon Age: The Veilguard (2024) is a role-play adventure game where you lead a team of plucky heroes in a battle to prevent the end of the world. You use magical spells and weapons to defeat enemies in a lush fantasy world while learning the lore of the realms you visit and forging connections with your allies. A continuation of the Dragon Age story, it retains the deep character interactions and meaningful narrative choices but evolves the game's combat into fast-paced yet strategic action.

Set 10 years after Dragon Age: Inquisition, the elven god Solas is attempting to destroy the Veil between the world and the Fade beyond. You play Rook, who's recruited by the Inquisition to help foil his plan. You explore the world in search of companions to help you on your quest, battling monsters and building your relationships. As you play, you gradually learn Solas' motivations and shape the unfolding of the story with your choices.

Play involves traversing the different areas you visit to find loot by solving environmental puzzles and completing quests, talking to your companions and the people you meet, and fighting monsters and enemies in fast-paced combat. Unlike the previous games in the series, combat here is done in real-time, with an emphasis on chaining together different moves and abilities to deal maximum damage. By carefully selecting your gear and choosing which abilities to learn, you fine-tune your character to suit your combat style. You can also issue commands to your companions to help you gain an edge over your foes. You talk to your allies, learning about their histories by completing missions with them; you can even pursue them romantically.

The result is a game that expands the series' grand fantasy tale of darkness and light, retaining the complex characters and engaging storytelling while updating the combat to emphasise fast-paced action and considered abilities and combos. Gradually mastering your own specific combat style is great fun, and rewards thoughtful gear selection and experimenting with ambitious strategies.
