Play Overview
Engare (2017) is a puzzle game about creating elegant geometric patterns with moving objects. Play involves picking a point on the machines you encounter to create complex target patterns. It's like the pattern-making Spirograph toys, only here, you have to make specific repetitive shapes to progress.
You play by selecting a point on the moving elements of each scene to draw geometric patterns. Each level's shape is unique, ranging from a rotating circle to an oscillating wave or even an abstract cloud. Although the concept is simple, clicking the right location at the right time to construct the exact required pattern is challenging.
As you progress, you must draw more complex shapes. In this way, the game serves as a mathematical conundrum and an introduction to Persian and Islamic art featuring these kinds of patterns. It sounds complex but is fun to attempt to create these patterns with a limited toolset. You also unlock drawing tools to use in a creative mode where you put into practice concepts that you've learned in the puzzle levels and export your creations outside of the game.
This results in a meditative game about how simple repetitive motions can result in beautiful patterns. It's as much an interactive art installation as a puzzle game.
