Play OverviewPlay Overview

Ethereal (2019) is a traversal puzzle game where you play an orb that must navigate increasingly complex labyrinths. Horizontally, you move freely, but vertically, you can only move through walls, with special items that help by altering the rules of play. It stands out both for its vibrant visual style and these inventive traversal mechanics, which make you think about movement and motion in a whole new way.

You play a small coloured orb and must navigate each of the 24 levels to find pairs of hidden gems. Along the horizontal axis, you move until you hit a wall, but you can only go up or down by going through walls. You can find special items that influence the field of play, such as orbs that rotate the entire stage, areas where you can push blocks to create new pathways, and cannons that shoot you vertically. When paired with ambitious strategies and experiments, utilisation of these mechanics can lead to unexpected ways to reach new areas.

The aim in each stage is to find all of the pairs of gems, but you can only collect them by carrying one gem to its match without touching any others. This leads to situations where you must carefully plan out your route, and clever and considered utilisation of each mechanic becomes essential.

The result is a game that puts an inspired spin on traversal, not only through the way you move but also through items that change the world and how you interact with it. Making use of all the tools at your disposal to move around in surprising ways makes for a novel and engaging experience where discovering the full potential of your actions is key.
