Play OverviewPlay Overview

F.E.A.R. (2010) is a horror-shooting game about a paramilitary force sent to take down supernatural beings overrunning a military compound. Play involves traversing the facility while shooting possessed enemies, flipping tables and breaking through barriers. It stands out for using high-impact action moments, rather than cutscenes, to tell its psychologically disturbing story.

You are sent in to investigate an unexplained massacre and are soon fighting hordes of heavily armed soldiers brainwashed by the supernatural force. Although clearly worse for their battle, with some missing limbs, they offer a considerable threat through their large number. Along the way, you encounter the beings behind the threat and uncover a deeper conspiracy.

As you progress, you work through the facility, taking on increasingly tough challenges - timed jumps, overwhelming enemy numbers, traversal through reality-warped spaces. Alongside the hostile environment, enemies work harder to find you and coordinate their attacks. You do, however, gain several new supernatural abilities from slowing down time to faster movement.

The result is a game that offers a power fantasy of blasting through the enemy horde, but intersects this with moments where that power is taken away. You move from quick action shooting to running for your life down psychologically confusing corridors.
