Play Overview
Fear the Spotlight (2024) is a horror puzzle game where you traverse a haunted school while stealthily avoiding the gaze of a lurking monster. Play involves exploring the grounds, gathering keys, screwdrivers and codes to complete tactile puzzles that reveal the path forward. It stands out for the dread and foreboding created by the visuals, sounds and stealth sequences.
You play Vivian, alone at night in Sunnyside High School, after a seance with her friend Amy goes wrong. You search for Amy through the dark corridors and interact with puzzles requiring objects scattered throughout classrooms and halls. For example, a vent you can remove from the wall once you have found the screwdriver. Often, there are multiple steps to obtaining key items - for example, to mend the pliers, you need to obtain the glue bottle from the vending machine, which in turn requires coins to access.
As you work to solve these puzzles, you must also deal with a wandering monster with a burning spotlight for a head. You must hide behind desks and lockers to remain hidden from its vision. The tension escalates as you continue to search for Amy and try to escape before the monster destroys the whole school. You learn to balance survival with progress and slowly uncover the tragic history told through the things you find and abandoned notes between students.
The result is an atmospheric exploration game that doesn't rely on intense horror sequences or difficulty to be memorable and spooky. The puzzles are highly interactive, and many require you to follow a trail of keys, objects and clues to solve.
