Play OverviewPlay Overview

Final Fantasy Tactics (1998) is a strategy role-playing game set in the medieval kingdom of Ivalice, where political intrigue and class conflict create a context for tactical turn-based battles. Play involves commanding a squad of units on an isometric grid to exploit terrain, turn order, and status effects and outmanoeuvre foes. It stands out for how you develop your characters with interweaving job‑based abilities and its morally complex storyline.

Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles is an update of the original Final Fantasy Tactics tactical role-playing game of the late 90s. It adds enhanced graphics, voiced dialogue and quality of life enhancements in the updated interface. You again step into a politically fractured Ivalice, to follow noble cadet Ramza Beoulve through the Lion War conflict fueled by corrupt church factions, rival princes, and deep social divides. Still central are the turn-based battles that unfold on relatively small grid battlefields.

As you progress, you learn to make efficient use of your allotted moves to factor terrain, height, and enemy types. Do well and your characters earn Experience Points and Job Points to level up in one of twenty jobs. This unlocks new abilities that can be combined to craft your perfect squad. This can be bolstered by side battles you find on the world map to further recruit and equip your heroes.

The result is a game that blends political drama with tactical battles. It stood out originally for its flexible class systems and challenging battles, and this is just as true today. For a more authentic experience, the classic mode combines the 1997 original graphics and gameplay with the renowned War of the Lions translation for a unique way to play this classic game.

Then there is the effect of terrain type and height. These things need to be handled while the tables quickly turn against you, or the balance of resources in a battle fluctuates unexpectedly.
