Forbidden Solitaire is an adventure horror game you play by investigating the contents of a cursed 1995 CD-ROM. Play focuses on games of solitaire, but things soon take a gruesome and violent turn as you embed gems in your flesh to gain the upper hand. It stands out for the retro moral-panic undercurrent and solitare-powered dungeon death investigation.
The game is set in 2019, where you find a strange yet familiar CD-ROM game from 1995 in a local charity shop. As you play the game you must win hands of solitaire to progress. However, the cost of tipping the odds in your favour requires ever more gruesome horrors and bloodletting.
As you progress you work to purchase upgrades from the friendly eye that watches you from the walls. You steadily uncover a variety of game-changing Jokers, although not all of these are helpful.
The result is a 90's full-motion video (FMV) inspired experience. It channels not only the style of interactions and visuals from the era but also the concern and panic about its digital hellscape of dungeons and death.
