Play Overview
Great God Grove (2024) is a communication-collecting game set in a peculiar purgatory you can only leave when all the gods are happy. You are mute but can interact with other inhabitants to capture their words, and (hopefully) use them to bring happiness. It stands out for its focus on systematically collecting phrases and then working out who needs to hear them.
You play a traveller sent to an afterlife run by a King who won't let anyone leave until all eight deities are happy. You get to know each god as best you can, although to begin with, you can't talk at all - just nod and shake your head. As you suck up more phrases, you can string together more detailed enquiries.
As you progress, you learn more about each god and why they have given up on protecting the land. In this way, you take on the role of a peacemaker, resolving each need, want and conflict. Some just need a please or thank you, while others won't move without a complex romantic confession. Other deities require a person to bond with, which means finding other characters who have dialogue you need. Either way, the fun is learning what makes each of them tick and how to meet those needs.
The result is an evolution of the classic conversational game so that issues and arguments must be solved with words, but not your own. Working from inside the land, you build connections and learn what happened to create such disarray.
