Heroes of Hammerwatch II (2025) is a fighting role-playing game where you use spells and weapons to defeat enemies and save the world. You explore the fantasy world to rescue imprisoned citizens and establish a settlement where you can develop more powerful abilities. Its exploration loop is in service of building your home base, so once you've ventured as far as possible, death returns you home to level up.
You play a hero who must defeat the evil forces of the Dark Citadel in a lush fantasy world. You choose a character, from a knight to a wizard, and use their weapons and spells to fight enemies, explore, and find loot. Along the way, you rescue trapped townsfolk to expand your base of operations, along with gathering upgrades that enhance your powers until you die.
When you die, you return to your settlement with some of the loot you gathered during the run. The inhabitants you've rescued can use your loot to permanently upgrade your gear, magical abilities, and strength. When you set out again, you start from the beginning, but thanks to your new powers, you can make it further and fight stronger foes.
The result is a game where death is not only inevitable but essential, as you come back stronger from each new run. Combined with its fast-paced action and ever-changing world, it makes for a deeply strategic and engaging game.
