Home Safety Hotline (2024) is a narrative horror game where you play a telephone operator dealing with calls about home maintenance. Play involves spotting clues from callers so you can look up and identify what the issue is. It's a novel challenge, but the real interest is as the issues escalate from insects and mould to fantastical and horrific infestation.
It's a game about observation and comprehension. You learn to spot the key information and then look things up in your database of possible issues. This enables you to offer advice to the caller that (hopefully) resolves their issue. It is crucial you get this right, not only for the survival of the caller but so that you keep your job.
As you progress you are drawn into stranger and stranger scenarios. Also, you realise you need to memorise the information on the system as it can go down when you are on a call - leaving you to try and guess what the right course of action is.
The result is a game that offers a window into a strange and scary world. The strange premise requires a strong constitution and offers a thought-provoking way of experiencing a science fiction story.
