Play Overview
Mirthwood (2024) is a role-play simulation game where you live a dual life of cosy farming and heroic adventuring. By protecting your crops and animals from the perils of each season, you craft and cultivate your homestead from which you set off to fight monsters and lift an ancient curse. It stands out not only for the unusual adventuring and farming combination but also for how you alter your strengths by equipping special cards.
After fleeing your village to escape a raid, you begin a new life in a mysterious new land. Here, you discover the ruins of an ancient civilisation and a long-dormant curse you set out to lift. Play involves developing relationships with the local townsfolk, building your farm and tending to your produce, and exploring to fight monsters and save the world. You protect your crops and livestock against the cold of winter and diseases however you can, ensuring they remain healthy for the finest quality ingredients. You then use these resources to cook meals and craft gear for your adventures.
As you play, you unlock cards related to the activities you do most of. These cards can then be equipped to unlock special skills and abilities, like being able to gather more wood and increase stamina or health recovery. As you can only equip five cards at a time, you need to carefully consider which ones offer the best advantages for your play style and current situation. When out adventuring, you fight monsters with your sword and solve environmental puzzles to uncover secrets. You interact with locals, who react to the way you play and the morality of your choices in the world, and complete quests for them to earn valuable rewards.
The result is a game where card-based upgrades to your abilities and fantasy adventures add an unusual twist to the life sim genre. Mixing and matching your cards to suit your situation, be it creating a life with the locals, tending your farm, or adventuring in the wilderness, makes for a novel game of ever-changing play.
