Play Overview
MotionRec (2025) is a puzzle game where you traverse a destroyed world as a little robot. Play involves the usual puzzles, exploring and learning, but here you progress by pre-recording movements and then playing them back in inventive ways. The game stands out for this unique gimmick, where your abilities evolve not only as you collect power-ups but also as you invent new ways to record useful moves to reach otherwise inaccessible areas.
You play as Rec, a cute little robot traversing a ruined world. The challenge is that jumps and platforms are often out of reach. You record movements in safe areas and then play them back to get around obstacles. The recording not only maps your movement but also defies gravity. For example, if you record walking in a straight line, you are then able to traverse a large gap as you float across.
As you progress, puzzles get more difficult, requiring more inventive use of your recorded moves and new ways to record different traversals. Although your recording ability doesn't change, new additions to the environment, like moving platforms and doors that can only be opened while pressing a button, add a level of complexity.
This results in a game that takes its core concept and explores it in depth instead of having lots of different surface-level ideas. It's a simple yet charming experience that keeps your brain engaged without being overly stressful.
