Play OverviewPlay Overview

Narita Boy (2021) is a retro running, jumping, and fighting game where you play a computer program trying to save its creator. It's a platforming game with a focus on tightly timed deflection and dodging, to evade attacks and counter from behind. It stands out for how you gain the attacks or movement of the bosses you defeat.

It is set in an alternative 80s where a video game console becomes connected with reality and traps you in its digital realm. To escape, you must defeat corrupt Stallions and save the world. Play involves exploring the retro world to discover broken binary code and using your sword to defeat a range of enemies.

As you progress, you learn to wield the sword's powers to take on bosses and capture their abilities. In this way, you clean out the corruption and save not only yourself, but the creator of the console.

The result is a retro-inspired reinvention of a platforming game that hums with the era's synth sounds and pixel visuals. Don't be fooled, there is a considerable challenge here.

Our examiner, Will Oster, first checked Narita Boy 8 weeks ago. It was re-examined by Ollie Robertson and updated 4 days ago.
