Play Overview
Pokémon TCG Pocket (2024) is a digital recreation of the hugely popular Pokémon Trading Card Game. You collect cards from mystery packs and fill out your collection, then use them in battles against the computer and other players. It stands out for the way it expands upon the physical game with the addition of new cards, visual effects and simplified rules that enable more casual play.
Like the physical version of the game, you get Pokémon cards from booster packs, of which you get two free per day. You slowly fill out your collection with different Pokémon species, and can also collect different versions of each Pokémon, with card variants from the real-life game as well as all-new versions with moving visuals. You can also trade with players from across the world to fill out your card collection, and can even collect cards in different languages.
The other half of the game is the Pokémon battles, wherein you use your cards to fight against either the computer or other players and their own decks of cards. Like the main Pokémon games, battles are turn-based, with different strengths and weaknesses based on the opposing Pokémon. Compared to the tabletop game, the rules are tweaked to enable more beginner-friendly play, such as a smaller maximum number of cards and hand size and a simplified scoring scheme. Despite this, there's still immense depth and strategic options for those who truly master the game.
The result is a game that offers a recreation of the hugely popular trading card game with rules that enable more people to enjoy the action, while still retaining depth and strategy. Gradually filling out your collection with all the different cards and designs is immensely rewarding and (if you can resist the ever-present in-game purchases) offers a free alternative to the real-world version.
