Play Overview
Star Birds is an asteroid-mining simulator where you gather and craft resources to fuel a flock of birds into space. You place and carefully link up machines to form a complex automated production line from scratch. It stands out for the small, spherical asteroid surfaces that make the production challenge an intricately intertwined resource management brain teaser.
You play the captain of an avian space expedition and must progress through asteroid sectors by gathering the necessary materials to complete multiple-step objectives. You do this by placing machinery on asteroid surfaces and hand-drawing lines of tubing to connect them, the catch being that separate lines cannot cross paths.
At first, this is as simple as installing an extractor on a mineral deposit and linking it to the launch pad. However, as you progress, things ramp up, requiring you to funnel resources between increasingly advanced machines to extract, combine, research, and transport materials across multiple asteroids. In this way, it becomes crucial to plan ahead when placing components to avoid future headaches caused by jumbled connections.
The result is a tricky test of spatial problems, combining concepts from real-life chemistry with accessible but by no means easy gameplay. Running throughout is a silly, humour-filled narrative about birds exploring the cosmos.
