State of Decay 2 (2018) is an open world zombie apocalypse base building survival game. Play involves exploring the open world, fighting off zombies and looting resources to defend your community base. It stands out for its focus on communal survival by building a base and keeping everyone in it supplied and protected.

The game is set in an apocalyptic world where a deadly disease called the Blood Plague turns people into zombies. You lead a small community who must scavenge for resources, materials and supplies. To do this, you use what you have gathered to upgrade your base with new defences and utilities. For instance, the infirmary unlocks medical crafting recipes to aid the wounded. The more successful your community is, the more likely it is to attract new people to join it.

As you progress, you defend your base from zombie assailants. You can kill zombies using guns, melee weapons and a number of different craftable items like explosives. Your community aid you too, and their effectiveness depends on the equipment they have access to and the defences you have installed. During your exploration, you encounter other survivors. Some might want your assistance which, if completed, maintains a good relationship with them and reduces their trading prices.

This results in a game with more community resource management and base-building aspects than many other games of the genre. It offers an experience that maintains the classic survival tropes while introducing more tactical and decision-focused elements so that each decision matters.
