Play Overview
The Flame In The Flood (2016) is a traversal survival game where you steer a raft down a raging river in the ruins of America. You avoid obstacles in the river and go ashore to gather the items you need while risking attacks by wolves. It stands out for the end-of-the-world scarcity that forces you to risk wild animals to keep your resources stocked.
You play as a lone traveller with your dog in a post-apocalyptic America. Setting out to find the source of a radio signal, you use a makeshift raft to travel down a huge river. You need to go ashore to gather resources to repair your raft. Along the way, you need to eke out provisions to stay healthy and construct weapons to defend yourself against the wolves that prowl the wilderness.
Play involves guiding your raft down the river, dodging the rocks and obstacles that block your way. It's tricky to control at first, but you gradually get a feel for how to avoid drowning. You need to go ashore to gather resources to heal and upgrade and repair your boat, but every time you risk being killed by the dangers that prowl the wilderness. You can fight them with your weapons, but it's always a careful balance of choosing when to go ashore and when to try and press on. If you die, you start again much further up the river without the resources you had.
The result is a game that creates a dual challenge of raft navigation and risk management where every decision could be the difference between survival and death. Gradually getting further down the river and closer to your goal is good fun, and a careful weighing of the risks and benefits of going ashore is greatly rewarded.
