Play OverviewPlay Overview

Trouble In Folklore Falls (2022) is a narrative puzzle game in the form of a physical box of objects that offers clues to a mystery to be solved. Play involves investigating the writing, photos and diagrams on paper along with other items to piece together what happened. It stands out for needing to search online to make progress - finding the game-created websites and even answering phone messages that help you on your way.

The mystery is set in the world of popular fairytale characters as you work with the Big Bad Wolf to crack the case. You start with the items in the box, but must soon investigate online to fill in the gaps. The Wolf keeps in touch through texts, email, radio and even telephone calls. It's quite a surprise when you get an actual call from the character in the game who then responds to your answers on the call.

As you progress, you learn that although there is a lot of novel window dressing there are some really good logic puzzles at the heart of the game. Observing the clues to work out who was where and at what time leads to solving the crime. There are also some classic puzzles woven into the challenge as well - messages to decipher, word searches and even some map-folding style conundrums.

The result is a game that's more like an interactive escape room than a simple murder mystery. The technological aspect is a genuinely essential part of the experience. Like in any good whodunnit, there are twists and turns along the way, but the solution is ultimately very logical and satisfying.
