The Fable Franchise

The Fable franchise is a series of action role-playing games set in the whimsical and morally dynamic world of Albion. It draws on classic fantasy storytelling of J. R. R. Tolkein and C. S. Lewis. but is perhaps most similar to the Earthsea Saga of Ursula K. Le Guin.

Unlike the linear stories of book, Fable leans into the procedural possibilities of video games. The choices you make in the game affect both the narrative and environment. This is seen not only in the options for progression but how the world and your character visually change as you make morally good, evil or neutral
choices.

The series was created by Peter Molyneux at Lionhead Studios. The games became know for their rich world with branching morality systems, humour, and a unique art style. As the series developed with Fable II (2008) and Fable III (2010), these mechanics expanded to incorporate more nuanced storylines, complex character and combat systems.

After a hiatus following spin-offs and the closure of Lionhead Studios, a reboot, developed by Playground Games is expected in coming years. Here are the games to date:

  • Fable (Xbox)
  • Fable: The Lost Chapters expansion
  • Fable Anniversary remade first game on Xbox 360
  • Fable II (Xbox 360) with free Knothole Island and See the Future downloadable content available.
  • Fable III (Xbox 360)
