Play OverviewPlay Overview

Fable III (2010) is an adventure role-playing game, set in a fantasy world where your actions impact the story, the people and the places you visit. Play involves exploring the world to forge your hero through your actions both in conversation and fights. It expands on its living breathing fantasy world, this time following the journey of a King, a Prince or a Princess, each of whose actions have consequences for how the adventure unfolds.

The game is set 50 years after the events of Fable II. You find yourself under the rule of your tyrannical sibling, King Logan and must lead a revolution to become ruler of Albion. However, once on the throne, you must make morally complex choices about governing and the consequences of leadership. Play is like previous games, where you explore the world, meet people and make decisions about what alliances to forge.

As you progress you work towards your revolution that takes control of Albion. To do this you must develop alliances and fight alongside your people. Along the way, you can also experience love and loss - all the while preparing to defend the kingdom against a looming threat. Your choices as ruler will lead to consequences felt across the entire land.

The result is a game that builds on the original's foundations. This time it deepens the moral challenge by focusing on the two poles of rebellion and rule. It again draws on the feel of Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea Saga, but without taking itself too seriously. There's plenty of silly humour and whimsy to go along with the grand themes.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Fable III 8 weeks ago. It was re-examined by Ellen Robertson and updated 2 days ago.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 16 for Violence.

Users Interact: The game enables players to interact and communicate with each other, so may expose players to language usually associated with older rated games.

In the US, ESRB state: While partaking in quests to gain experience and skills, players affect their moral standing by choosing to do good deeds or bad ones, thereby "leveling up" their customised character in divergent ways. Many quests require the use of magic, weapons, and hand-to-hand combat to defeat enemy soldiers and creatures. Blood spray is depicted when enemies are slashed and shot during battle, and in slow-motion finishing moves. Players can consume alcohol and obtain a drunken state, resulting in a screen-blurring effect and dialogue that is distorted/altered. Players can choose to engage in sexual relations (some unprotected) with males, females, or groups of characters. Although sex acts are not shown, sexual moaning sounds are heard in the background. Sexual statistics are kept by the game, including the number of sexual encounters, the highest number of group sex partners, and a list of STDs each player has contracted. The words "sh*t," "b*tch," and "a*s" can be heard in dialogue.

Skill Level

11+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. It's also important to ensure children understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. The unusual social progression and decision-making, alongside the fighting, magic and fantasy adventure, make this a good match for pre-teenager skill levels. Provided they are comfortable with the content, the game offers a good challenge for their social deduction, identity and narrative processing skills.
