Five Nights at Freddy's 2 (2014) is a point-and-click survival game where you defend yourself against killer robots. Like the first game, you check cameras, but instead of doors, you have a mask that hides you from animatronics. It stands out for an increased reliance on audio cues to infer what's happening as your time is eaten up by hiding behind the mask and winding up an ever-present music box.

You play a nightguard at a new Freddy Fazbear's Pizza location, with ten animatronics pursuing you rather than the five of the first game. Like the original game, you can't move from your office and have a camera system you can use to check where the animatronics are, but now there are no doors at the entrances to your office. Instead, you have new tools at your disposal, some of which only work on specific characters.

You can deter some creatures by flashing them with your light. Others enter your office, and you must hide behind a mask until they leave. During this time, you can't check the cameras and must use the audio cues to infer what the robots are doing. One character is only kept at bay by keeping a music box wound up, eating away at even more of your time. On the later nights, you become almost totally reliant on the soundscape to know what's going on as all your time is dedicated to using your flashlight, the mask, and keeping the music playing.

The result is a game where you must intuitively detect what's happening through limited audio and visual hints while managing an increasingly complex set of systems. It's the first game in the series to lean into the complex storytelling the series is known for. Gradually getting to grips with the task at hand can be tricky, but mastering it makes for a highly rewarding challenge.

Content Rating

Rated PEGI 12 for Horror. The overall atmosphere of the game is creepy and unnerving. Sinister laughs and footsteps can be heard making their way towards the player as the nights progress. The animatronic creatures which stalk you have disturbing designs meant to intimidate. The characters primarily move locations when they are not being looked at and can only be tracked using the CCTV cameras. If the player fails to stop the oncoming animatronics or runs out of battery power, then they will be caught by one of the animatronics. In this situation, a loud jumpscare where the creatures lunge at the player is triggered. The screen then cuts to black and the player is returned to the main menu.

Rater 12+ on the Apple App Store for Infrequent/Mild Cartoon or Fantasy Violence and Frequent/Intense Horror/Fear Themes.

Skill Level

10+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. It's also important to ensure children understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. Pre-teenagers are often keen on the mild horror stories around the Five Nights at Freddy's games. Along with considerations about content, you do need to be able to stay on top of keeping track of the robots and managing lots of different systems at once.
