Play Overview
You play a young boy in the week leading up to his birthday. You watch as he is bullied by his friends and family, before being haunted by nightmarish creatures trying to get into his bedroom each night. Play involves moving between four locations in the room - two doors, a closet, and the bed. At each door, you must listen carefully to what's beyond in the darkness. If there's nothing, you must flash your torch to keep things away, but if you hear a quiet breathing you must quickly shut the door until the monster leaves. At the same time, you must continually check and clear your bed of accumulating little creatures, and keep a monster in the closet content by shutting its door periodically.
It's a lot to keep track of, and you can never remain in one location too long and leave the other locations unchecked. As the week progresses you must learn the meanings of all the different sounds which inform you of what's going on. By mastering these, you gain a mental image of the current situation and can prioritise the most pressing challenges. Once you beat all five main nights, additional nights are unlocked, featuring new animatronic monsters to learn the mechanics of and even a mode where the entire screen is pitch black.
The result is a game where your success is dependent on interpreting and acting on the quiet sounds of danger in the darkness. With every choice a gamble between life and death, it's a frightening and tense challenge, yet one you can learn to master.
