Metaphor: ReFantazio (2024) is a role-play from the Persona team that takes the relationally-charged adventure in a fantasy direction as you work to lift the curse from the kingdom's lost prince. Play is a combination of exploration, conversations and turn-based battles that weave around a time-limited calendar structure. It stands out for taking the familiar urban adventure into a medieval setting while retaining political, psychological and societal themes from the previous games.
The game is set in the Kingdom of Euchronia, where you work to reclaim the throne for your friend, the rightful prince, who has been cursed into a deep sleep. This requires you to navigate a complex political landscape to participate in the kingdom’s first-ever royal election. You are uniquely positioned for this task - a discriminated against Elda who can challenge the hatred to restore the prince’s rule not only through birthright but actions.
As you progress, you learn to use the Archetype system to shift roles and abilities. Combat is turn-based but with a strategic turn-counter system that you can use to exploit enemy weaknesses and land critical hits. It's also important to talk to and get to know the people you meet. This is more than just narrative development - your companions and relationships determine combat Synergy options and character progression.
The result is a huge game about a remarkably personal journey. You are forced to confront societal biases, forge unexpected alliances, and redefine your worth in a world bent on casting you as an outsider.
