Play Overview
Periphery Synthetic (2024) is a traversal game where you explore symbolic worlds represented mainly by sounds and audio effects. Described as interactive music, you move about, using the different spacial sounds to understand where you are and where to go, gathering resources to improve your movement. It may sound like a straightforward collect-a-thon, but the novel use of audio as your primary interface with the world enables sightless play and pushes you to truly master interpreting the sounds around you.
You play a surveyor on a barren planet and must explore to find resources and map out the world for possible habitation. Rather than using the very limited visuals to know where to go, you must rely totally on the soundscape to locate the resources you need. Every movement you make has a unique sound associated with it: advancing, jumping and turning the camera for example. You can also activate a sonar ping which bounces off nearby resources; by using the returning directional audio cues and their pitch you can pinpoint their direction and head over to them. In this way, you collect resources to upgrade your movement abilities and gain access to new areas.
The result is a game where hearing than seeing the world around you is the most valuable tool in your arsenal. Gradually learning to interpret the different sounds to deduce where to go next is both highly gratifying and essential to discovering the world's ancient monuments and ruins.
