The Exit 8 (2024) is a traversal game where you are trapped in an endless underground passageway with unexpected aborations that threaten you. Play involves observing and exploring your surroundings to reach the exit. It stands out for its singular focus on an eerie game feel and disconcerting vibe.
The Exit 8 is a short walking simulator inspired by Japanese underground passageways, liminal spaces and back rooms. Your task is to get to the exit through the seemingly innocuous corridors. As you go there are worrying signs on the walls about anomalies. The challenge is to spot when these occur and then turn back from where you came before continuing. Get this right and you can reach the exit, but fail to spot something and you are returned to the start.
As you progress you learn how to spot these anomalies. Paying attention to the details of the world becomes crucial. Maybe a poster looks strange. Maybe there's someone holding their phone in the wrong hand. Maybe you are getting left behind by the other characters.
The result is a game about how tiny details can tell a story. It focuses your mind on the minutiae of its world and in doing so leads you down a strange narrative of unease and jump scares.
