Play OverviewPlay Overview

Ultros (2024) is a trippy running, jumping and exploring game set inside a giant ancient Sarcophagus that holds demonic beings and fertile land. You adventure into the Sarcophagus by battling enemies and triggering plant life to bloom.

The Sarcophagus is a vast psychedelic alien landscape teeming with life and dangers. You traverse with the help of your blade to deal with brutal, intimate, close-quarter combat. However, just as important is how you turn your weapon to tending the plant life of the world. This not only provides moments of contemplation and respite from the brutal combat but (more importantly) deeper access to obscured paths.

The game progresses with loops that can be restarted at key moments in the story. This not only gives you a chance to try areas again but make different decisions about how to interact and tend the flora and fauna of the world - which in turn unlock new skills and abilities.

The result is a platform-exploration game, commonly called Metroidvanias. It stands out first for its vibrant visual style. Mostly though, it's unusual for inviting players to bring life to the planet they are exploring (along with the death they are dealing with the aliens along the way).

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Ultros 11 months ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 5 months ago.

Rated PEGI 16 for arcade-style violence with blood. This game features depictions of arcade violence. When the player's character or enemies are attacked, exaggerated blood effects are shown on impact. Characters may also flash red to indicate taking damage. Multiple boss fights showcase bloody death effects, with one alien depicted with their head bursting into blood and unidentifiable pieces. This game also features use of bad language, including '*!@?*'.

Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB TEEN for Blood and Gore, Mild Language, Violence. Players traverse the space station, interact with characters, and battle both human and fantastical enemies (e.g., bug-like creatures). Players use futuristic swords to attack enemies in melee-style combat. Battles are highlighted by impact sounds, cries of pain, and large blood-splatter effects. Some boss battles contain instances of gore: a creature's tendrils repeatedly cut off; a human character's arm cut off; a creature's eyes bursting. Players can also collect body parts from defeated enemies and store them in their inventory. The word “*!@?*” appears in the game.
The game features fantasy violence and blood, and light nudity depicted in an artistic manner.
