Play Overview
Deep Time Walk (2016) is a physically active narrative game where you go for a walk as you listen to a history of the Earth that's tied to each step. The game calculates your speed and distance to match your real-world progress and translates it to a journey across 4.6bn years of time, taking in every key evolutionary event as it occurs.
This means that each meter of the 4.6km walk is the equivalent of 1 million years of history. "As we walk we realise in our bodies, how ancient, how marvellous this animate earth of ours is."
You just walk, and listen to the extraordinary story of Earth's history, based on the latest scientific evidence about how our planet evolved over the vast expanse of geological time.
At the start, you learn about the accretion of the Earth from a disc of rocky debris and how our moon formed, you meet volcanoes and encounter the immense meteorites of the Late Heavy Bombardment. Later, you hear about key events such as the first appearance of oxygen-producing photosynthesis, The Great Oxidation, the evolution of the first nucleated cells, and the appearance of multicellular life. A time-contextual glossary is available to look up key concepts.
