Play Overview
Wingspan Board Game (2019) is a collecting game where players seek to attract the best birds to their nature reserve. You collect cards, use resources and gain actions to build your collection of birds. This is a game of quite literally managing your reserves, as you carefully deploy your collection of birds, so their individual qualities contribute to your overall success.
You play as keen birdwatchers and work to attract rare birds to live in your wildlife reserve. You roll dice to harvest food for each bird so you can move them from the shared area to the correct habitat in your reserve. Each bird has special abilities that help you to attract other birds and score points in a variety of ways. For example, Bird cards allow you to gain food, lay eggs and "tuck" birds into your habitat.
It gets interesting because of the incredible array of Birds cards, each presenting a real bird in great detail. Understanding the specific aspects of each bird lets you maximise the positive impact that these have on your overall nature reserve.
As you play, your reserve becomes populated with more varied birds, giving you a wider choice of actions to build your collection in a more effective way. Get this right and score big bonuses and inch closer to being the player with the most points at the end of four rounds.
It's a game about building your knowledge and your card collection at the same time. Like understanding the habits and behaviour of real-life birds, the cards have their own unique features, actions and powers, so the deeper your knowledge of the birds, the more successful you are likely to be.
