Baldur's Gate 3 is a role-playing game that recreates the Dungeons & Dragons experience in a digital world. You explore the world and fight enemies by rolling dice and weighing up your stats to see what happens. But beyond that, it's the vast branching narratives that emerge, stemming from your choices, that make this an outstanding game with each playthrough unique.

NotesAccessibility Notes

You can select Explorer, Balanced or Tactician difficulties that adjust enemies strength and your resilience. You can turn on Karmic Dice so the game makes your dice rolls better if you keep failing. Honour mode is an even higher difficulty setting added post-launch, while there's also a custom difficulty which lets you gradually adjust the difficulty of different parts of the experience, such as enemy number in battle, enemy aggression, and even whether your heath can reach zero in a battle.

Before you start the game there is Onboarding to ask to confirm Subtitles, Nudity and whether you want to share secret/private cut-scenes with other players.

The controls and interface adjust to switch between keyboard-mouse and controller. When playing with controller you have direct control. When playing with mouse-keyboard movement is point-and-click.

There's an Auto Rotate camera (and Auto Rotate speed) that enables you play on a controller with a single stick. Playing this way requires the use of the D-Pad to select items for interaction. You can use this D-Pad selection as a sort of auto-aim as it enables you to select targets in battle with one press. You need to hold buttons to end your combat turn. You can only remap Keyboard but not Gamepad.

You can adjust the text size of subtitles and HUD notes, as well as in-game books you find, to make them at least 1/20 of screen height. But there are other HUD elements and Menu items that are smaller. All dialogue is voice-acted apart from the responses you select for your character.

There is a mini-map and a full map. You see markers on the main map and can pull up objectives required for each mission marker. However, this doesn't offer much navigation assistance to get to a location, apart from a faint marker on the compass. The journal provides a good list of objectives, however there's some complexity in terms of quest sequencing that needs to be worked out. You can add and remove items from the HUD, and set the orientation of the mini-map.

In the turn-based battles, some things are indicated by colour, but you can also select this element to provide a text box explanation.

Reaction-Time Not Critical: Individual game actions don’t need quick reactions, or there are settings to lower the requirement for quick reactions. This means you don't need to quickly press a button in response to an on-screen prompt, target a fast-moving target or skillfully complete a scenario against the clock.

These features aid your progress through the game offering different ways of maintaining your progression.

Assisted Progress With Boosts: If you fail frequently the game automatically gets easier to ease the likelihood of failure. Or there’s an option to start this happening, like giving more health, lives or power each time you fail. Sometimes called Rubber Banding.

They are at least 1/20 (46 pixels on 1080 screen) the height of a landscape screen and at least 1/40 height on portrait screens, or can be adjusted to be. We base this on the full line-height, including the space above and below the letters. Considered separately from the general text of the game, the subtitles are large, clear and of good contrast.

All Speech Subtitled (Or No Speech In Game): All spoken content has subtitles, or there is no speech in the game. This means there is no requirement to hear spoken dialogue or narrative to play the game.

Captions

Speaker Indicator and their Tone: Textual captions indicate who is speaking and their tone (or there is only ever one person speaking). This can also be indicated visually in the game with character icons or character expressions with text in speech bubbles next to the person speaking.

Voice Acted

All Dialogue is Voice Acted (Or No Speech In Game): All of the game dialogue and narrative can be voiced, or there is no speech in the game. This means there is no requirement to read the dialogue and narrative text to play the game.

NavigationNavigation

Clear Mission Objectives: The game provides clear, structured missions with directional guidance and advice on which can be attempted next. This also indicates (ideally on maps where they are provided) which missions can't be attempted because you do not have the appropriate items yet.

Head-Up Display Navigation: Indication of where to go next with overlaid arrows, minimaps and waypoint markers. This supplements in-game visual and audible cues with additional guidance about where you are and where you need to go.
