Play OverviewPlay Overview

Castle Crashers (2015) is a cartoon looking fighting game, like Golden Axe, The Simpsons or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade games, set in a medieval universe where a dark wizard steals a mystical gem and captures four princesses. Four knights are charged by the king to rescue the princesses, recover the jewel, and bring the wizard to justice.

This sets up a tongue in cheek romp through side-scrolling levels for four players. The emphasis is on mashing buttons and battering enemies, but the visuals remain cartoony. As you progress you can find new weapons and upgrade your characters. Players work together but also race to pick up the most coins to get the best upgrades.

Castle Crashers Remastered was released for newer consoles with better visuals and smoother frame rates.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Castle Crashers 4 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 18 months ago.

Content Rating

This game was rated PEGI 16 for frequent scenes of arcade-style violence featuring blood. The game features online playing capability which may involve real-time interaction with other players.

Users Interact: The game enables players to interact and communicate with each other, so may expose players to language usually associated with older rated games.

Rated for younger players in the US. Rated ESRB TEEN for Blood and Gore, Cartoon Violence, Crude Humor.

Skill Level

8+ year-olds usually have the required skill to enjoy this game. Still, it's important for parents and guardians to consider the maturity required to process the game content. It's also important to ensure children understand in-game purchases and have spending limits set-up. Simple slapstick fighting requires a relatively low skill level. Younger players not worried about the cartoon gore will enjoy the bravado and tongue in cheek Monty Python-style humour. Playing together with youngsters also makes this a good fit for lower skill levels.
