Play Overview
Children of the Sun (2024) is a shooting game where you control a bullet as it flies through the air. When it hits a target, you change its direction so that it hits another target, and so on until all enemies are killed. This unusual interaction means you have to carefully consider your initial position and target sequence, and paired with the vibrant, VHS-style visuals, makes it stand out.
You play a lone woman on a desperate, revenge-fuelled quest to take down a mysterious cult one member at a time. You stealthily move around the outskirts of their bases until you find a suitable position, then kill everyone there with just one bullet, that twists and turns through the air.
Play involves exploring each location to scout and find the best sniping position, then choosing your target and shooting them. Once your bullet leaves your gun, you assume control of it, slowing down time every time you hit someone and turning it to face your next target, with the goal of eliminating every single person there. You need to carefully decide on the order of your victims' deaths so that after every hit the next cult member is in sight. You can also use explosive items like cars and barrels to take out multiple targets at a time.
This gets harder as you progress but you also get more abilities like being able to slow down time and re-position the bullet in midair as well. This combines to create emergent and inventive strategies to weave your bullet through buildings and forests.
The result is a game that offers an unusual mix of stealth, shooting, and puzzle that, when combined with the saturated visuals and over-the-top blood and gore, make for a novel experience. Pulling off long chains of kills over great distances as a result of your planning and tactics is greatly rewarding and keeps the game engaging throughout.
