Play Overview
Each game is set in the near future between 2027 and 2072. You explore various dystopian cities, and use your body modifications, called Augmentations, to help you get around and fight. While the story in each game differs, they all feature you as a secret agent sent to infiltrate or expose various secret organisations, from the Illuminati to real-life conspiracy theorists and militant groups. Depending on your choices, some games even offer more than one ending.
In Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, you play Adam Jensen and face off against the Illuminati. You explore the streets of Prague, London and Dubai taking on missions that involve sneaking into various locations, gathering intel and defeating enemies.
As you progress you shape your character with Augmentations like arm-mounted blades, remote hacking tools, and speed dashes. Each one you add allows you to progress in different ways, like being able to reach high-up windows or open sealed doors. Tactically selecting the Augmentations that best suit the way you play is essential, and experimenting with your abilities can often result in finding alternate ways to progress. When around lots of enemies, you need to be stealthy and avoid detection, and the combat is fast-paced and precise and allows you to use guns and other weapons in conjunction with your Augmentation abilities.
The result is a series of games that empower you to make careful and impactful choices. Pair this with the tactical fights and stealth sections and you have a really immersive experience. Creating your own custom character through unique combinations of Augmentations is not only fun but through experimentation and ambitious uses of the abilities they grant you, means you can progress through the story in unique ways.
The series is often considered a spiritual successor to System Shock, a 1994 game with a remake in the works, that's also set in a dystopian future and features dermal patches instead of Augmentations, which provide player benefits but also come with side effects.
