Dredge (2023) is a fishing adventure set in a remote archipelago called ‘The Marrows’ with a dark past. You explore the surrounding waters to fish for hundreds of different sea creatures and other resources. It stands out for the clever rhythm-based fishing mechanics and the sinister story told by the locals you meet.

You start from your new home and explore the land and sea to complete quests and visit neighbouring islands – each with unique opportunities, inhabitants, and secrets. Get back home to sell your catch, and upgrade your boat to dredge deeper for long-buried secrets.

As you progress you catch all manner of valuable fish you store them in your hold making use of the available space with Tetris-like placement. Care is needed as danger is everywhere in the form of sharp rocks, shallow reefs and threats that lurk in the fog at night.

The result is a game that combines a mystery narrative with more-ish fishing and upgrading. Everyone you meet has their own story and each new creature you discover offers unique benefits. It's a dark and lovely combination that draws you in to take ever more questionable risks with each voyage.

Our examiner, Jo Robertson, first checked Dredge 13 months ago. It was re-examined by Andy Robertson and updated 3 months ago.
