Play Overview
Dungeons of Hinterberg (2024) is an action-adventure set in the Alps where mysterious fantasy dungeons have appeared and created a thriving tourist trade for adventurers. You explore the dungeons, master magic, solve puzzles and slay monsters while trying to get to the bottom of why they are appearing. It stands out for the real-world location coming to terms with (and capitalising on) the dangerous dungeons in its midst.
You play Luisa, a law trainee overwhelmed by her busy corporate world. To refocus her life, she travels to an idyllic tourist town far into the mountains, surrounded by snowcapped peaks and mysterious dungeons to explore. You investigate these dungeons, fighting off the monsters that inhabit them, and use the magical abilities you find to delve deeper.
Play involves picking a new area each day, and then traversing the mountains and dungeons using snowboards, minecarts and magic. When you enter a dungeon, you use swords and mystical weapons to defeat hordes of monsters in fast-paced combat.
As you progress you discover ever more puzzling and unusual locations - each with their own traversal or puzzle challenge. Do well and you unlock new powers and abilities to help in combat and solve the many puzzles that block your path. For example, the ability to open special doors or blast new routes through the stone. Experimenting with these powers is essential to discovering more dungeons and beating stronger enemies.
The result is a game that takes the Zelda-like dungeons and places them in an everyday real-world community. Although exploring, collecting and battling are familiar in games like these, here they create a moreish and surprisingly coherent journey.
