Play Overview
Earthlingo (2019) is a hidden object vocabulary game. You are given an object to find in one of 14 different languages and then explore the world to locate it. It's not a new idea, but here the world and things you do are rich and feel more like a collect-em-up as an educational game.
To play you first choose which language you speak and which language you want to learn. You then move around the world to click on the objects that match the clues in other languages. Like any game, you have to use the environment to get around and discover the objects. Perhaps you need to shrink to get into a small space, or use a jetpack or car to get to hard to reach places.
As you progress you unlock aspects of the world that grant new words to discover. Once you have completed a set of words you can opt to revisit them in a test of your memory. Because every word you learn in Earthlingo is associated a matching item it's a good way to improve recall. It offers over 1000 nouns, adjectives and verbs.
The game can be played to-from 28 different languages, including learning content, the tutorial and much of the interface. For example, you can learn German from Thai or Japanese from Finnish. This includes Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kazakh, Korean, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Uzbek, Vietnamese.
The result is a game that is not only educational but unusually deep and rich to explore. It is continued to be developed with more language based challenges and more words being added all the time.
Our examiner, Oli Hawkins, first checked Earthlingo 2 years ago. It was re-examined by Thom Robertson and updated 5 weeks ago.
