Play OverviewPlay Overview

Fossil Echo (2016) is a short running and jumping game about a young boy's mistake and subsequent climb of a giant tower in the middle of the sea. The story is told in short animations and with challenging platform-style gameplay to create a moving and intriguing experience you can play multiple times.

Play involves jumping and running through internal and external spaces around the tower. Your task in each space is to continue your ascent but this often involves solving puzzles and timing jumps as well as charging forwards.

Like Limbo, Abe's Oddysee or Another World, it's an intentionally challenging game. You need to play levels repeated times to learn the careful timing, stealth and quick reactions needed to complete them. There are enemies in the game who shoot at you and present real harm, but after your initial defence that causes an enemy to fall to his death, you respond with resolute non-violence as you continue your climb.

As you progress you discover through flashbacks how the boy got there, and, more importantly, why he is there?

And for those willing to meet the challenge, eight temples offer some insight on the game's lore and backstory.

Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Fossil Echo 2 years ago. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 23 months ago.
