Play Overview
Hermit and Pig is an action-adventure game about a socially anxious hermit and his pig companion who must save a village from hunger. Along with exploring the world to complete quests, you fight a menagerie of whimsical creatures by picking attacks, Pokemon-style, but then pressing button combos to trigger moves like in Street Fighter. It stands out for this unusual battle mechanic and how your social anxiety is conveyed through tense, time-limited dialogue selections where a poorly chosen answer can hurt you.
You play a lonesome hermit and his pig as they live their quaint lives and forage for truffles. Your life is turned upside down when a young girl from a nearby village asks for help finding a mythical mushroom to feed her cash-strapped town. As you set off on your journey, you must face your own anxiety around people, fight off creatures and enemies, and uncover the shady goings on at the local factory.
Play involves foraging for mushrooms, fighting enemies, and talking to characters. Combat is similar to games like Pokémon, but rather than a traditional turn-based approach, you have a time limit to do as many moves as you can. You must choose the move that will do the most damage, like stomping on a bug, then execute a sequence of button presses to use it.
As you progress you gain experience with this system and learn how to use more attacks in the time to defeat tougher enemies. Talking to other characters is presented similarly to these battles, only here it's your anxiousness that is the ticking clock; you must choose a dialogue option in a short amount of time, with odd and nonsensical choices leading to you taking damage.
The result is a game that highlights the challenge of social awkwardness and anxiety while also offering a unique twist on classic role-playing tropes through timed attack windows and button sequences. Growing in strength and confidence as a result of mastering the mechanics and interactions instead of increasing your level or gaining new powers makes for a more personal and satisfying challenge.
