Play OverviewPlay Overview

Inscryption (2021) starts as a card-based adventure where you build a deck of cards to take on adventures and battles. To this, it adds escape-room-style puzzles, both in the card game and in the room in which you are playing. The result is a psychological horror that slowly reveals bloody secrets inscribed on the cards.

Made by the creator of Pony Island, this has the same third-wall-breaking play. You are never quite sure what the card game is and the wider world in which are playing. Solve lock combinations, access writing bureaus, and deal with buried artefacts. The challenges soon start to mount up as you unlock the secrets lurking behind the walls of Leshy's cabin and embark on an unexpected and deeply disturbing odyssey.

As you progress you acquire a deck of woodland creature cards that grow in power. Obtaining these cards, however, requires more than luck and judgment. Your character in the game is called to perform surgery and self-mutilation.

Our examiner, Jo Robertson, first checked Inscryption 2 years ago. It was re-examined by Andy Robertson and updated 10 days ago.

Play Time: This game will take between 13 hours and 20 hours to complete. Inscryption appears to be a repeating-round card game, but soon turns into its story-driven horror experience. There is a free expansion called Kaycee’s Mod that lets you play the card game without the story. This turns Act 1 of Inscryption into a proper deck-builder roguelike, competing with challenge runs and seemingly endless unlockables.
