Legacy of Dragonholt is a tabletop role-play game in the style of Dungeons & Dragons. Here though, things are approachable with less reading and no one (game master) who has to run the game. With up to six friends, you quickly build unique heroes explore a central village hub-world and embark on a choose-your-own-adventure narrative. The twist is that which choices you can make depends on your characters, and the variety of branching paths is huge.

Play is a mix of D&D and choose-your-own-adventure. Your aim is not to win or beat other players, but to create a compelling story together. Once you have chosen one of the six races (humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, gnomes, and catfolk), a class and other traits you set out on your journey.

As you progress there are two forms of play: exploring the village and developing your characters and setting out on one of the six quests. As you go you encounter colourful characters with ongoing stories and learn about the living breathing world.

You work through the quests by reading the scenario and making choices about how to progress and interact with the story. The number of options available at each point is really high. Which ones you can take will depend on your abilities and character traits. This eventually leads you to the village where things become more expansive.

The village has a map to explore with shops, inns and inhabitants. The things you decide to do take time, and move the game clock forward. As days progress you are moved on to new entries in the book. For instance, a bakery may only be open early in the day, and the baker themselves may take a shine to you if you’ve already met their cousin, or if they’ve heard of the great deeds you’ve accomplished earlier in your stay in the village. This means you won't see everything the first time you play it.

As you progress there are a variety of overarching mysteries and stories that you can try and solve. For example, the letter you receive at the start of the game only starts to really make sense as you play on through the world. There's a murder to solve and items to find that offer rewards.

The result is an approachable D&D-style adventure that does all the heavy-lifting elements for you. For families, it offers an easy way into these games, and a good step on from the choose-your-own-adventure books. If you've ever wanted to try a game like this but have been put off by the impenetrable complexity, this is a perfect solution.
